5 of Charlotte’s Can’t-Miss Parks

a man standing on the side of the trail in the woodsSpring has sprung! It’s time to enjoy the beautiful weather! And what better excuse to do just that than national Take a Walk in the Park Day? For those of you who haven’t already added it to your calendars, Take a Walk in the Park Day is March 30th, which is coming up quickly! So here’s an overview of 5 of my favorite parks in the Charlotte area.

Freedom Park in Charlotte, NC

Located off of 1900 East Boulevard in Charlotte, Freedom Park stretches over 98 acres. With a great number of walking trails and paths and a connection to Little Sugar Creek Greenway, it’s an excellent place to take a walk. There’s also a ton of options for sports. Freedom Park is home to multiple baseball fields, tennis courts, soccer fields, basketball courts, and volleyball courts. With two playgrounds, this is a great park for people of all ages!

For those looking for a park in Waxhaw, Dogwood Park at Wesley Chapel is a great choice. There are plenty of paved and unpaved walking trails at this beautifully scenic 22.5-acre park. Dogwood Park features a gorgeous lake where visitors can fish from the handicapped accessible pier (with an NC fishing license).

Cane Creek Park in Waxhaw, NC

This is a wonderful park for all ages! Cane Creek Park features an enormous 350-acre lake where visitors can fish, boat, or swim. Take a walk on one of the trails surrounding the lake, or enjoy one of the many amenities Cane Creek offers such as rowboat rentals, sports fields, and playgrounds. With camping areas available for rent, you can turn your national Walk in the Park Day into an overnight event.

Goat Island Greenway in Belmont, NC

The name is a little misleading: there are no goats on Goat Island Greenway in Belmont. At least, not anymore. There is, however, almost a mile of paved surface trail that crosses two pedestrian bridges. Check out the observation pier, fitness pavilion, or 18 hole disc golf course. Since this park has a couple of excellent playgrounds, kids can hop around like goats or enjoy lunch at one of the fitness centers.

Colonel Francis Beatty Park Charlotte, NC

With so much to do and explore here, you could keep yourself entertained for all of Take a Walk in the Park Week…if that existed. This 265-acre park has numerous sports fields for basketball, tennis, soccer, softball, and even horseshoe. The trails are perfect for walking, but there are also trails for mountain biking.
